You should get a couch throw that is easy to wash and looks good, unless you want to constantly be vacuuming and cleaning. Scotch Guard material works good for stains but I don't know about pet hair release. A good lint brush like you use on your sweaters works well sometimes and I've even used Duct Tape in an emergency.
