Im new to this site ,but I have a -little- knowledge fish.

could be dead hair algae or worms??

No...I think you have enough knowledge of fish but perhaps not of plants. What I think those white strings are part of your plants just above the tap roots and are called aerial roots. Another thing that could have happened is the tap roots have reached the bottom and started to grow up again and out of the gravel. Cut them off with scissors...it wo'nt stop their growth.
