Suddenly turning white from a fright is a myth. Suddenly turning white from an injury isn't. When I was 12 years old I was sitting on the edge of a bathtub and fell backwards, hitting my head on the other side of the tub. I was unconscious for a while. Since then I have had a patch of white hair where my head hit the tub. The same effect can be achieved with scalding water, but I don't recommend it.
