I have very dark hair, and want to dye it almost blonde. The only OTC dye I can find that will do that is for black folks. Does anyone know if it will work, or is there a real difference in the make-up of hair besides kink vs wave?

You can only use color to go lighter if you're hair has not been colored. Color does not lift color so if your hair has been previously colored, the hair dye will not do anything to the colored areas. It's lilke drawing on dark paper with a highlighter. It won't work. If you have all natural color, and you attempt to go from brown to blonde with color, it will turn orangey and brassy. You should try bleach highlights first, or have it proffessionally done.
You can use hair dye for black hair, but it's a bit stronger since the cuticle of that texture of hair is tighter. And it will turn brassy since you're lifting too much pigment out at once.

Dye that is made for black hair is often more gentle than that made for white hair. The reason for that is that when the colors are formulated, they take into consideration that many african americans relax their hair--therefore they need a more gentle color. I would not recommend an over-the-counter color. Go to Sally Beauty Supply if you wish to dye it yourself, or go see a professional to get the right results.

OK hairdressers, is color for ethnic hair stronger or weaker? I like ethnic products on white peoples hair because it is a better value at the beauty supply. But color....Hmmmm I think it is the same. Their cuticle is more open so maybe bleach is weaker and color stronger... I don't know
